Earlier this year, January 2026 took me to Orlando, Florida. Initially to the VMX Veterinary Conference, then briefly into the immersive worlds of Walt Disney World, and finally out to sea on a Disney cruise through the Bahamas. At first glance, these experiences may appear unrelated to veterinary dentistry, let alone to a scholarly journal devoted to it. Yet as often happens when we step outside our usual professional environments, unexpected parallels emerge. Parallels that resonate strongly with the purpose of this journal and the community it serves.
VMX remains one of the largest and most dynamic veterinary conferences in the world. What continues to distinguish it is not merely its scale, but its deliberate integration of science, clinical practicality, innovation, and professional connection. Walking through lecture halls, wet labs, and poster sessions, one is reminded that veterinary medicine advances through a shared commitment to lifelong learning, critical evaluation of evidence, and the exchange of ideas. These are precisely the same principles that underpin the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry.
A scientific journal, such as a major conference, is a carefully constructed ecosystem. It relies on authors willing to share their work, reviewers prepared to rigorously and generously evaluate it, editors who curate and refine it, and readers who critically engage with it. VMX made this interdependence tangible. The conversations sparked in conference rooms often begin months or years earlier in journals such as ours, and just as often, they return there in the form of new studies, reviews, and clinical insights.
Outside the convention center, Disney World offered a very different, but equally instructive, perspective. Disney is renowned not simply for entertainment but for its obsession with systems, consistency, and attention to detail. Every experience, whether at Epcot or Animal Kingdom, is intentionally designed, meticulously maintained, and continuously refined. Errors are anticipated, redundancies are built in, and quality control is relentless.
Veterinary dentistry demands a similar mindset. Successful outcomes are rarely the result of isolated technical skill alone. They depend on protocols, preparation, imaging, instrumentation, anesthesia, nursing support, follow-up care,

and reflection when outcomes fall short of expectations. As in Disney's operations, excellence is achieved when systems support individuals, rather than relying on individuals to compensate for system failures.
Animal Kingdom offered a poignant reminder of our profession's broader ethical responsibilities. Its emphasis on conservation, education, and respect for animals aligns closely with the values that guide veterinary care worldwide. Dentistry is sometimes viewed as a narrow specialty, yet oral health profoundly influences welfare, comfort, systemic health, and quality of life. The work published in this journal, whether clinical, experimental, or ethical, ultimately contributes to that broader mission.
As our readership continues to expand, the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry is proud to strengthen its global reach and collaborative partnerships. In this spirit, we are delighted to welcome the Egyptian Veterinary Dentistry Society (EVDS), for whom the journal now serves as the official journal. This partnership reflects the growing interest and expertise in veterinary dentistry across the Middle East and North Africa and underscores our shared commitment to advancing education, research, and clinical standards worldwide. We warmly welcome EVDS members to our international community of readers, authors, and reviewers.
The final leg of my journey, a 7-day cruise, provided space for reflection. Removed from daily clinical demands, it became clear how important an intellectual pause is for professional growth. Journals serve this same function. They create space for thoughtful engagement with evidence, for challenging assumptions, and for reconsidering how and why we do what we do. In a profession that is increasingly busy and pressured, this role is more important than ever.
As we look ahead to the remainder of 2026, the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry remains committed to fostering rigor, relevance, and global collaboration. Our readership spans continents, practice types, and career stages, yet we are united by a shared belief: that oral health matters, that standards matter, and that advancing knowledge is a collective responsibility.
If a journey through conference halls, theme parks, and open seas reinforced anything, it is this. Excellence is never accidental. It is designed, reviewed, refined, and sustained by a community that cares deeply about what it produces. That is as true for a world-class conference or a carefully crafted experience as it is for a scientific journal.
Thank you to our authors, reviewers, editors, and readers for continuing to make the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry a trusted and evolving platform for our profession worldwide.
