With the 2018 volume, we mark the 25th year of Childhood: A Journal of Global Child Research, a forum for multi-disciplinary, globally informed scholarly studies of children and their childhoods. From its inception, Childhood endeavored to reach beyond accepted notions, frames, and approaches to children’s lives and, according to the first Editor, Ivar Frønes in the inaugural Editorial, to provide an “opportunity for critical and creative reflections, and for a preliminary airing of new ideas, new angles and new interpretations”. In our 25th anniversary year, the current editors thought this an opportune moment to reflect on the paths over which Childhood and studies of childhood have traversed and to chart ways forward. To that end, we have opted to engage in several Conversations with our colleagues about a variety of issues along several themes. The idea of “conversation” gestures to our sense that childhood studies and the journal exist in and through multiple discussions among various parties over time. We emphasize this point to remind ourselves that ideas must continue to flow in order to have life and to be generative so as to reach out beyond the boundaries of their original inception. These Conversations will appear as special sections in each issue of Volume 25, they will also be added to the section below which will be updated throughout the year.
We are happy to invite you to attend a seminar to celebrate the 25 years of Childhood – A Journal of Global Child Research.
The seminar will serve as an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of the journal to childhood studies but also, more broadly, to foster critical and forward-looking perspectives on the advancement of the field. The theme is ‘Childhood studies – the next 25 years’.
