Special Issue: Quantum Economics and Sustainable Futures

This special issue builds upon the discussions and presentations of the Quantum Economics and Sustainable Futures Workshop held in Salamanca on June 26-28, 2024. We invite workshop participants and other interested researchers to submit original work that expands and deepens the themes discussed at the event. We invite the academic community to submit original articles, case studies, and technical notes that address the topics mentioned below. We seek work that is rigorous, innovative, and relevant to the theory and practice of quantum economics and its potential to contribute to a sustainable future.

Guest Editors:

  • Dominic Widdows – IonQ – USA
  • Javier Parra Dominguez – University of Salamanca – Spain
  • Emmanuel Pothos – City University of London – UK

Special issue information:

This special issue aims to explore the emerging intersection between quantum economics and sustainable futures, a rapidly evolving field of research that leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to address the economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century. In the spirit of the innovative School of Salamanca, whose 500th anniversary we commemorate in 2025, this special issue seeks to foster dialogue and collaboration between economists, physicists, social scientists, and other experts to develop new theories, models, and tools that can contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.

Topics of interest:

  • Theoretical foundations: Exploration of the basic principles of quantum economics and their relationship to classical and neoclassical economics.
  • Practical applications: Development of quantum models and tools to address specific economic problems, such as resource allocation, risk assessment, and decision-making.
  • Sustainability: Analysis of how quantum economics can contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy.
  • Social and ethical implications: Examination of the social and ethical implications of quantum economics, including issues of equity, justice, and responsibility.
  • School of Salamanca: Reflection on the legacy of the School of Salamanca in the development of modern economics and its relevance to quantum economics.
